OPERATIONS

In addition to areas of the KGS that provide research and service, the KGS includes sections that provide support and services to the public and to KGS staff. A branch office in Wichita, the Wichita Well Sample Library, collects, archives, and loans cutting samples from oil and gas wells drilled in the state. The office also sells publications and provides information in the Wichita area, particularly to the state’s oil and gas industry. The KGS computing services section provides computer support to KGS staff, providing hardware and software support, networking, e-mail support, back-up, trouble-shooting, and other capabilities. Administrative staff provide support for travel, purchasing, accounting, contracts, human relations, and other activities.

The Data Access and Support Center (or DASC) was created to collect, archive, and distribute databases, particularly those for use by natural-resource agencies in the state. More information about those databases, and other DASC activities, is available at gisdasc.kgs.ku.edu/. The KU Energy Research Center was established in 1991 to promote and facilitate energy research at KU. The primary goal is to develop enhanced energy-research programs serving state, regional, and national energy needs. The ERC has participated in a number of successful collaborative research and technology-transfer programs in petroleum production at KU. These programs continue to grow and have led to nearly $8 million in grants/contracts awarded through the ERC in the past six years. For more information, see www.kgs.ku.edu/ERC/index.html.
