The Tertiary Oil Recovery Project, TORP, at the University of Kansas was established in 1974 to acquaint Kansas oil producers with the technical and economic potential of enhanced oil recovery methods for Kansas fields. The project is funded by the State of Kansas and also acquires supplemental funding through research grants and fellowships. The project cooperates with the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, the Department of Geology, the Department of Chemistry, and the Kansas Geological Survey.
Specific objectives of the Project are to evaluate the potential of oil recovery processes in Kansas, conduct research and development work on those processes which are applicable in the State, investigate the application of reservoir engineering and geology for characterization of Kansas reservoirs, disseminate information about oil recovery processes and reservoir management to the Kansas oil industry, conduct a viable program of technology transfer for the industry, interact with the petroleum industry and provide technical assistance on field tests and demonstration projects, and educate students and operators in the technology of enhanced oil recovery and efficient reservoir management.
The staff at the Tertiary Oil Recovery Project consists of two co-directors (Drs. Don Green and Paul Willhite), five professionals (Stan McCool, Mike Michnick, Richard Pancake, Rodney Reynolds and Jyun Syung Tsau), two technicians (Jim Pilch and Scott Ramskill), one full time secretary (Maxine Younes) and one half-time secretary (Mayumi Crider). An advisory board consisting primarily of oil and gas operators in the State was established at the beginning of the Project. This board has been active throughout the program and has offered guidance in such areas as the development of the Oil Recovery Conferences held every other year in Wichita and in planning the research program. They meet twice a year.
