A DOE-Sponsored Workshop
New Cost-Effective P&A Technique Workshop

The Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory in cooperation with the Osage Nation, and Cementing Solutions, Inc. is conducting a workshop to demonstrate a new plugging technique on September 18, 2001 at 9:00 a.m. The workshop will begin at Osage Tribal Headquarters in Pawhuska, Oklahoma and proceed to the wellsite where Cementing Solutions, Inc. will demonstrate a simple, fast, and economical way to plug and abandon wells.

Technology
Cementing Solutions Plugging Process simplifies the plugging process while maintaining sound engineering principles and design processes. The method involves filling the entire wellbore with cement or placement of discrete plugs in the casing. The use of common construction cement equipment eliminates the need for complex mixing equipment, high-pressure pumping equipment, and a workover rig.

When the mixed slurry is transported to the location, it is discharged from the ready mix truck into a holding tank and transferred to the well via a low-pressure pump. Once in the well, the increased hydrostatic pressure exerted by the cement column forces the well fluid into the formation.
Design of the cementing treatment includes analysis of the well conditions to determine if the method is appropriate for a candidate well. Cement volumes, placement rates and times, casing hardware and other operational needs are determined. The treatment is monitored throughout mixing and placement to confirm that operations are executed as designed.
