KGS Playa Core Drilling Underway

Joe Anderson

On a blustery early March day in 2022 Joe Anderson, driller for the Kansas Geological Survey, takes samples for a playa project centered in GMD1, which includes parts of Wallace, Greeley, Wichita, Scott, and Lane counties. Playas are shallow depressions that hold water from rainfall and runoff to create small temporary lakes. Led by the Kansas Geological Survey and funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency through the Kansas Water Office, the project will study the interaction between agriculture and playas to improve understanding of of how farming playas affects recharge rates and associated issues. Read more about it in this project news release.
