Middle Kittanning Coalbed Example

As part of the MIDCARB project, we intend to calculate the coalbed methane resources and CO2 sequestration potential of all the significant coalbeds in Ohio. CO2 can be sequestered in coalbeds in a number of ways. For example, CO2 can be sequestered by solubility, hydrodynamic, and adsorption trapping. CO2 can also be geologically sequestered either as a gas or in a supercritical state. A GIS evaluation of coals is underway in Ohio and will be integrated into the MIDCARB Project. A structure contour map of the Mississippian-Pennsylvanian boundary, a net coal thickness map, and an overburden map of the Pennsylvanian-Permian sedimentary section were generated. In addition, the methane content per ton was estimated. These maps provide an estimate of the suitability and potential of individual coal beds to sequester CO2. Coverages from Ohio Geologic Survey.
