Position: Cartographic Services Specialist

Official University Title: Research Analyst

Starting Date: Position available on or about August 5, 2019; exact starting date negotiable.

Salary, employment status, and fringe benefits: Starting salary $47,500-$52,500, depending on qualifications. Full-time unclassified professional appointment at the University of Kansas, subject to annual review. (Selected candidate must possess proof of eligibility for U.S. employment.) Benefits include 22 days vacation leave, 12 days sick leave, 9 holidays annually; group medical and dental; life insurance; retirement program options; and University staff privileges.


Position Overview

The Kansas Geological Survey (KGS) GIS Services Section's Cartographic Services unit has a new position for an individual to work with the unit's manager in all aspects of data creation and management, and map production. The work will be focused on, though not limited to, creating data and maps of Kansas geology from field data collected by KGS geologists. Tasks of the position include map and data creation and development using GIS, metadata creation, maintaining and updating GIS data and documentation, and printing on-demand maps for KGS Publications and Sales. The individual will assume responsibility for management of the unit when the manager is away.

Job Duties

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in geology, geography, or related field;
  2. 3 years of experience in GIS employment OR an advanced degree with an emphasis in GIS;
  3. Proficiency with Esri GIS software suite;
  4. Strong written and verbal communication skills as evidenced by application material, references, and on-site interviews.

Physical Requirement

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience in map composition;
  2. Experience in metadata creation and data attribution;
  3. Experience in either geologic or soils mapping;
  4. Professional certification in GIS-GISP, KGIS, or similar;
  5. Familiarity with state of Kansas;
  6. Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and/or non-Esri GIS or mapping software;
  7. Programming experience, especially ArcPy, Python, Esri ModelBuilder, .Net, or C++;
  8. Experience in geodatabase design and development.
