Working Job Title: Technical Research Assistant (2950531)
Regular Hourly or Work Study
Hourly Rate: $9.35-$10.50, depending on qualifications and experience
Tentative Start Date: October 22, 2018
KGS Section: Exploration Services
Hours Per Week: 5-20 hours per week (flexible) during business hours, 8-5, M-F

Duties

Vehicle and equipment cleaning and maintenance:

65% Primary responsibility will be the cleaning of Exploration Services (ES) vehicles and equipment. Cleaning, waxing, and detailing ES vehicles inside and out, before and after fieldwork and during downtime. Vehicle include but not limited to diesel trucks, crew trucks, passenger vehicles, trailers, exploration drills, other seismic vehicles, seismic equipment, shop/work area, and other fabricated equipment and vehicles.

10% General maintenance of vehicles and equipment will include but not be limited to, minor electrical repairs, driving vehicles to and from service, and other minor maintenance activities.

Shop and Fieldwork:

20% Inventorying of trailer supplies, shop supplies, and equipment. Must have the ability to lift and move equipment and supplies ranging in weights and sizes. Periodically assist geophysics field research crew at various locations around the U.S. and an exploration drilling crew in Kansas. Field work may require walking, bending, and lifting for many hours through uneven terrain, heavily wooded, or mountainous areas.

5% Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  1. KU student, meeting enrollment requirements during academic year
  2. Basic knowledge of shop tools and shop safety.
  3. Experience working outdoors.

Position Requirement

  1. Valid Kansas Class "C" driver's license at onset of employment in order to drive state vehicles.
  2. Ability to lift and carry 50 pounds.
  3. Available in blocks of two or more hours at a time during the weeks while semester is in session.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience with the use of hand tools and minor mechanical repairs.
  2. Commercial, agricultural, or domestic vehicle experience including maintenance and troubleshooting.
  3. Ability to be away from Lawrence during summer for a week or more at a time (w/ travel expenses paid).
  4. Engineering or geoscience background.
  5. Work experience with welding, cutting, grinding, and basic metal fabrication, plus electronic fabrication, troubleshooting, and soldering.
