General Meeting Information

Field Trip: A free pre-meeting field trip will be offered to view the Geohydrologic and Experimental Monitoring Site (GEMS) of the Kansas Geological Survey and discuss developments in equipment and testing for determination of hydrologic properties and parameters for heterogeneous aquifers. The site is at the edge of the alluvial aquifer of the Kansas River and has a saturated thickness of unconsolidated sediments of about 65-75 ft. The trip will then move up onto the limestone and shale upland north of GEMS to view research ponds of the University of Kansas Experimental and Applied Ecology Program for testing pesticide effects on aquatic life. Field trip participants will depart from the Holiday Inn lobby on Monday, October 12, at 1:30 p.m. Transportation will be provided to the sites. Conference attendees wishing to participate in the field trip need to indicate their interest on the space provided on the registration form so that adequate transportation can be arranged.

Monitoring Networks Workshop: The State Ground-Water Monitoring Networks workshop that starts at 10:25 am, Wednesday, October 14 at the conference will continue in the afternoon from 1 to 5 p.m. (or later if needed) in the auditorium of the Kansas Geological Survey. The afternoon workshop will include discussions of water-level and water-quality networks, including uncertainties, and demonstrations of data base and retrieval systems via the internet.

Location: The conference will be held at the Holiday Inn-Holidome & Convention Center, 200 McDonald Drive, in Lawrence, Kansas. The hotel is located about 1/2 mile south of I-70 (Exit 202) and approximately 52 miles driving distance southwest of the Kansas City International Airport.

Accommodations: A block of rooms has been reserved at the Holiday Inn-Holidome at a conference rate of $55.00 for a room with two double beds plus 10.9% tax. Sleeping room reservations should be made by each individual directly with the hotel, 785-841-7077. Please specify that you are with the Midwest Ground Water Conference to insure the special group rate. Any special sleeping room requests should be directed to the Reservations Manager, ext. 8902. The sleeping room block will be held until September 11, 1998. After this date, reservations are on a space available basis only and the rack rates may apply. Room, tax and incidentals must be paid by the individual. All individual reservations must be guaranteed for arrival by a major credit card or advance payment of the first room night plus tax. If all these rooms are booked, the Holiday Inn will assist you by providing contact information for other nearby hotels/motels. Your patronage of the Holiday Inn at this discounted rate will help keep the conference fees low for this and succeeding years due to planning by hotels in computing the use charges.

Cancellation Policy: A full refund of the registration fee will be provided if cancellation is received no later than the close of business on September 25, 1998. If you are unable to attend, a substitute may attend in your place.

Presenters Information: Slide projectors and overhead projectors will be available for those making oral presentations. Please contact Melany Miller if you have special visual needs. Poster boards will be provided on tables for poster presentations. Use thumbtacks or pushpins please, the panels are not equipped for Velcro.

Transportation: Lawrence is less than one hour drive on I-29 to I-435 to I-70 from the Kansas City International Airport which is served by major airlines. Shuttle service from the airport and return is available by calling one of the following companies in Lawrence: A-1 Shuttle Service (800-736-1090 or 785-842-2432), Superior Shuttle Service (888-795-3914 or 785-838-4500), or Affordable Limousine Service (785-841-0463). Reservations are suggested 24 hours in advance. The shuttle cost ranges from $21 to $25 one way and from $40 to $45 round trip for service at the Holiday Inn.
