Design

The PRB is a continuous trench that is excavated and simultaneously backfilled with granular iron and inert materials. The PRB must be sufficiently large vertically and horizontally to encompass the entire cross section of the plume as it moves through the aquifer and must be sufficiently permeable to not impede the flow of ground water through it.  In most cases the backfilled PRB extends below the bottom of the aquifer and above the seasonal high water table. The PRB must be of sufficient thickness to remediate the aquifer to the established environmental standard.
