Permeable Reactive Barrier (PRB)

General Description of the Technology

PRBs are structures placed within an aquifer to passively intercept and treat contaminated ground water as shown in the diagram below. Click here to review the PDFs that provide more information on this technology.

Contaminated ground water flows through the barrier under the natural hydraulic gradient and reacts with materials contained within the barrier’s reactive zone to immobilize or transform the contaminants into a less toxic or more rapidly biodegradable state.
