Advantages
- The plume is remediated within the aquifer.
- Remediation is performed passively with no ongoing energy input and limited maintenance following installation.
- With the exception of the injection/production wells, surface structures are not required as part of the remediation.
- The treatment zones do not alter the ground-water flow pattern as would be the case with the pump and treat method.
- There is no limitation on the maximum depth of the treatment zone as there would be with a permeable reactive barrier.
- The treatment zone avoids mixing of contaminated and clean ground water that would occur with the pump and treat method.
- Based on limited field testing the expected life of the treatment zone is at least a decade and under some conditions several decades.
- The treatment zone is renewable or can be expanded by repeating the process in existing or new injection/production wells.
