Hourly Rate: $11.00

KGS Section: Outreach & Public Service
Hours Per Week: Varied hours and days.
Duties
(50%) Assist with Legislative Kansas Field Conference Preparation
- Travel for 1-3 site visits
- Assist with save the dates, invitation letters, registration forms, information sheets, name tags, etc.
- Develop draft brochures for review and distribution
- Assist in writing draft content for field guidebooks
- Help construct all guidebooks
- Travel for 1-2 dry runs with Blair and others
- Attend and assist during the field conference
(35%) Coordinate Public Outreach Activities throughout the year.
- Organizing and cataloguing the dark room materials (all year)
- Develop rock, mineral, fossil kits that can be used by K-12 teachers and the public
- Catalogue outreach activity materials
- Organize a girl scout/boy scout badge program (all year)
- Create a portable display case that can be used at KGS booths and for outreach events
- Earth Science Week activities, including:
- Work with KU Natural History Museum to coordinate events
- Order AGI teacher toolkits to distribute to our Wichita office (Mike Dealy) and at other outreach events (July/August)
- Help organize and create an annual outreach event hosted by the KGS during Earth Science week
- Organize and contribute activities for:
- Women in Science at Washburn University (early October)
- Science Olympiad at JCCC, set up tests for students to complete (February)
- Kaw Valley Eagle Days, organized by Audobon society in Lawrence (February)
- Enhancing Your Future with Mathematics and Science at Emporia State University (first Saturday of March each year)
- Hillcrest Science Night (April)
- Earth Day celebration with Topeka zoo (April)
(15%) Legislative liaison assistance: Track and record bills of interest to the KGS that are available for all staff to review as needed.
Required Qualifications
- KU student with at least a senior academic status, meeting the minimum 6 hour enrollment requirement during the academic year for employment.
- Experience interacting with the public effectively in person, over the phone, and/or by email.
- Major in Geology, Geography, Biology, Environmental Science, or related field (must have coursework in geology).
- Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills as evidenced by application materials.
- Demonstrated computer competency (Microsoft Office suite).
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience with coordinating and executing public outreach activities or programs.
- Demonstrated ability to organize information and schedule activities.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently.
- Experience with geologic field work.
- Certification or demonstrated proficiency in science communication.
