Paleogeomorphology of the Sub-Pennsylvanian Unconformity of the Arbuckle Group (Cambrian-Lower Ordovician)

Kansas Geological Survey
Open-file Report 2001-55

Scalloped Features

In these two scalloped features the Arbuckle dips at very low angles (0.5-1.5 degrees) to the northwest
Cross-Section B-B', location shown at left). The fault-bounded southeast sides of these features are relatively uniform and the northwest sides have a scalloped nature. Ground-water traveled down-dip and emerged above shale layers on the northwest (down-dip) sides of these features initiating sapping processes. The sapping processes produced theater-headed valley terminations on the northwest sides giving it the characteristic appearance. Analysis of structural dip within the Arbuckle supports primary bed-dip to the northwest (down-dip fluid flow), and up-dip headward migration of sapping landforms.

Scalloped Feature #1: Scallops are concentrated on the northwest side of the plateau with relatively straight edge on the southeast.

Scalloped Feature #2: Scallops are concentrated on the northwest side of the plateau with relatively straight edge on the southeast.
