Building Topographic Relief in the Build-and-Fill Zone
Destructional (Erosion) - After Sea-Level Fall
Creation of Topographic Relief-Summary
- Construction (building) of relief by carbonates mostly during rises
- Reef, mound, and grainstone facies build relief
- Fast rise over mid-shelf/ramp position limits amount of building when
rates of carbonate production are not optimal
- Facies building relief may show lateral migration (e.g. backstepping)
and be overlain by deeper water deposits
- Accommodation remains underfilled
- Erosional relief created after falls
- Subaerial exposure and fluvial incision create variable topography
- Delta-like siliciclastics funneled in during lowstands may modify relief
