V: Conclusions

The annual cooperative water level measurement program was successfully completed by both the KGS and DWR prior to February 1, 1998. The annual program is designed to regionally sample the High Plains Aquifer in Kansas so trends can be established and evaluated for effective incorporation into water resource manage-ment strategies. Water levels were recorded in 95% of the 1,375 network wells with data quality evaluations completed on the 542 KGS wells. Modifications to the acquisition methodology developed after statistical analysis of the 1997 KGS annual measurements were implemented during 1998. The KGS portion of the 1998 water level data possessed no systematic errors of consequence.

Spatial analysis of the 1997 annual network well distribution revealed 47 loca-tions that required additional water level data to permit continuous and uniform sampling of the High Plains Aquifer. Candidate wells for all 47 locations were identified through the cooperative efforts of the KGS, DWR, and the GMDs. Of those 47 wells, only 28 have sufficient construction and historical information to attempt a water level measurement, with 17 actually being measured. The 17 are candidates for incorporation into the network. The Geohydrology section of the KGS will establish the selection criteria and accept/deny each well's application for admission. If accepted, these 17 wells will become part of the annual network in 1998. Yearly geostatistical studies will define undersampled areas and select optimum locations for replacement wells to eliminate extraneous holes in the network occasionally left in the hexagonal system.
