Chairman James R. Daniels

Mr. Daniels graduated from the Colorado School of Mines in 1951 with a Geological Engineering degree. Before graduation, he worked for the Continental Oil Company doing summer work. Between 1951 and 1953 he was a Lieutenant in the U.S. Army - Corps of Engineers.

Between 1953 and 1961 he worked as a geological engineering consultant in partnership with his father. From 1961 to 1967 he was co-owner and officer of D & Drilling Company where he did work in prospect generation, well site work, corporation commission appearances, and supervision of field production and well completions. Presently, Mr. Daniels is General Manager of Murfin Drilling Company in Wichita, Kansas where he manages 200 employees.

Besides serving as a PAG member, Mr. Daniels is also a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), Kansas Geological Society (KGS), and is a Certified Petroleum Geologist. He is registered as a Professional Geologist with the State of Wyoming. Mr. Daniels also serves as Director of the Colorado School of Mines Alumni Association.

Nick Powell of Colt Energy has agreed to serve as Vice Chairman. Powell has actively served on the PAG since its inception in 1995.

Powell graduated from Tulane University with a B.S. degree in Economics in 1975. He went on to work for Yellow Freight System, Inc. in 1976. His duties were purchaser of fuel and development of a subsidiary named Overland Energy, Inc. (OEI). OEI participated in other oil company exploratory prospects in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Louisiana. Their drilling budget peeked at fifteen million dollars per year. After the government deregulated the trucking industry in 1980, Yellow Freight phased out their expenditures in the oil and gas business and concentrated more on their core business as a common carrier.

Powell started his own company, Colt Energy, Inc. in 1981. He currently serves as president and director of the Kansas-based oil and gas exploration and production company. Main offices are located in Iola and Fairway, Kansas.

In addition to the Petroleum Technology Transfer Council – North Midcontinent PAG, Powell has been an active member of many other oil and gas societies. He serves on the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the Kansas Independent Oil & Gas Association (KIOGA), the Board of Directors of the Eastern Kansas Oil and Gas Association (EKOGA), the Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA), and the Advisory Board of the Tertiary Oil Recovery Project at the University of Kansas (TORP). He was a past president and chairman of the Environmental Committee of EKOGA and served nine years on the Oil and Gas Advisory Committee of the Kansas Corporation Commission representing EKOGA.

James B. Devlin

Mr. Devlin is the President and owner of Viking Resources of Wichita, Kansas. He is also President of Westland Oilfield Supply. He attended the University of Kansas and graduated with degrees in geology and petroleum engineering in 1955. He served as an infantry officer in the Marine Corps from 1955 to 1958, and then joined Conoco in 1958 and worked as a staff geologist. In 1963, he became a consulting geologist and independent oil operator, with Jayhawk Oil Company. In 1982, he formed Viking Resources, Inc. with Tom Wesselowksi.

In addition to serving on the PAG for the North Midcontinent RLO, Mr. Devlin is also a member of the Advisory Board for the Tertiary Oil Recovery Project (TORP) at the University of Kansas.

John O. Farmer III

Mr. Farmer graduated from Missouri School of Mines with a Petroleum Engineering Degree in 1963. He received his Professional Degree in Geological and Petroleum Engineering in 1995 from the University of Missouri at Rolla. From 1963 to 1965 Mr. Farmer served as First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Germany.

He then worked as a Petroleum Engineer with Shell Oil Company. He worked in various engineering jobs in Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Illinois, Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, and North Dakota. When he left Shell in 1969 to join his father in business he was Senior Reservoir Engineer.

He has worked at John O. Farmer, Inc. since 1969 until the present, serving as Vice President in 1971 and President in 1989. John O. Farmer, Inc. is an independent operation with drilling and production in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska.

Mr. Farmer serves as an Advisory Board member of TORP at the University of Kansas, a board member of the Kansas Independent Oil and Gas Association (KIOGA), and as a member of the PAG for North Midcontinent RLO. He is also a member of SPE and a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Kansas.

David R. Gordon

Mr. Gordon graduated with a B.S. degree from Oklahoma State University in 1970. He was registered as a Professional Engineer in 1976. He received his M.B.A. at Wichita State University in 1985.

He worked for Cities Service Oil Company from 1970 to 1980 in capacities from Production Engineer to Regional Petroleum Engineer and finally Chemical Flood-Project Engineer at the El Dorado Micellar/Polymer Project. From 1980 to 1983 he was Operation Manager/Production Engineer with Vincent Oil Corporation. He has been with Gore Oil Company since 1983 as Operations Manager/Vice President.

In addition to serving on the PAG for the North Midcontinent RLO, he also serves as a member of the Advisory Board for TORP at the University of Kansas.

Paul Simpson

Mr. Simpson graduated with a Science Degree in Petroleum Engineering in 1957 from the University of Oklahoma. He worked with the Army Security Agency from 1948 to 1952. From 1957 to 1961 he worked as a Drilling/Production Engineer at Phillips Petroleum. From 1961 to 1968, he served as Manager of the John M. Denman Oil Company, and is presently the President/CEO.

He serves as a member of the PAG for the North Midcontinent RLO and as an Advisory Board member of TORP at the University of Kansas. He has served on the Board of Directors for the First National Bank of Sedan, Kansas, as Chairman of the Board.Other boards he has served on include: Sedan City hospital, Bluestem Regional Medical Foundation, Jane Phillips Hospital, EKOGA past President, and KIOGA - Vice President. Mr. Simpson also serves as Vice President of the National Stripper Well Association and is Director of the IPAA. He was the Republican County Chairman of Chautauqua County as well as the president of the Chautauqua County Shop and Supply.

Bob Barnett has served on the PAG since the beginning of the North Midcontinent Regional Lead Organization.

Mr. Barnett has accumulated over forty years experience in petroleum engineering with special emphasis on oil and gas drilling and production, secondary recovery operations, and management.

Since 1979, he has had overall management responsibility of southeast Kansas operations of James E. Russell Petroleum, Inc. which includes oil and gas producing operations, oilfield research, laboratory and Russell Engineering.

His responsibilities included supervising, coordinating, and planning exploratory / development drilling programs, waterflood installations and monitoring property evaluations, budget planning - capital and expense, working with Kansas legislative groups covering the oil and gas industry, management of a staff of 20 employees - both field and office, problem solving in all areas, and serving on the company Board of Directors.

Besides serving as a PAG member, Mr. Barnett is also a member of the Advisory Board for TORP with the University of Kansas. He serves on the Board of Directors and is past President of EKOGA. We welcome Barnett’s leadership abilities into the PAG.
