Abstract:
The Water Well Completion Form Database (WWC5) contains information from records submitted by water well drillers to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Drilling companies are mandated by state legislation under the Kansas Groundwater Exploration and Protection Act (KSA 82a-1201 et seq.) to provide information pertaining to the location, type, use, casing, nearest source of contamination, and so on of the well drilled using the WWC5 form. No water quality data is provided in this database. A good portion of the archived WWC5 records are in the form of electronicly scanned images of the forms themselves. As such, the only standard database items entered into an Oracle RDBMS relate to the location information of the WWC5 wells, use of the well, when the well was completed, status of the wells, well depth, static water elevation, and the name of the drilling company servicing the site.
Purpose:
The purpose of the Kansas Groundwater Exploration and Protection Act is to provide for the exploration and protection of groundwater through the licensing and regulation of water well contractors in Kansas to protect the health and general welfare of the citizens of this state; to protect groundwater resources from waste and potential pollution by requiring proper description of the location, drilling and well construction, and proper plugging of abandoned water wells and test holes; and to provide data on potential water supplies through well logs, well pumping tests and water quality tests which will permit the economic and efficient utilization and management of the water resources of this state. In order to achieve these objectives, this act requires licensing of water well contractors; provides for the establishment of standards for well construction, reconstruction, treatment and plugging; requires each licensed water well contractor to keep and transmit to the state, upon request, a copy of the log of the well, pump test data if available, and water quality samples; and maintains within the state geological survey of Kansas a record system of well logs and water quality data which will be available to the public (KSA 82a-1202).
