Description:
Abstract:
This database is delivered as 'geology', 'contacts', 'beds', and 'tectonics' shape files and a geology.avl file providing the legend for the 'geology' shape file. The 'geology' shape file displays attributed polygons representing intervals in the stratigraphic sequence identified and mapped at the surface in Chautauqua County. There are 7 mapped intervals in the Chautauqua County database representing this sequence. The youngest interval represents unconsolidated alluvium deposits of the Quaternary System in the Cenezoic Era. The remaining mapped intervals represent much older stratigraphic intervals from the Permian and Pennsylvanian systems of the Paleozoic Era. From youngest to oldest, these intervals correspond to the Admire and Council Grove groups of the Permian System, followed by the Wabaunsee, Shawnee, and Douglas Groups of the Virgilian Series, Pennsylvanian System. The oldest interval of rocks exposed at the surface corresponds to the Stanton Limestone, the uppermost formation in the Lansing Group, Missourian Series of the Pennsylvanian System. In the 'contacts' shape file of the database, all of the lines forming boundaries between adjacent geologic polygons (corresponding to different mapped intervals) on the map are represented by attributed line features. The 'beds' shape file includes 27 locally significant 'marker beds' found within the stratigraphic unit(s) of the mapped intervals. The surface expression of structural geologic features such as faults or the axis of a fold, syncline, or anticline are identified in the 'tectonics' shape file.
Purpose:
This database was developed as part of the large scale (1:24K) surface geology data in the Core Database collection of the Kansas GIS Policy Board. It shows locations of geologic outcrops, geologic structures, and contacts in Chautauqua County, Kansas.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
All database products of this project are derived from source maps compiled on 1:24,000-scale topographic maps of the United States Geological Survey. Accuracy will be consistent with the standards met by those maps. Surface location and extent of geologic unit outcrops can generally be determined with greater precision than such features as soil type boundaries, even when obscured from direct observation by soil cover. When exposed at the surface, geologic outcrops can be located with an accuracy consistent with the standards met by the USGS topographic maps.
Logical_Consistency_Report:
Datasets delivered to the Data Access and Support Center are quality assurance tested for major documentation and topological errors using macros. The databases are evaluated based on questions similar to the following: Does the database's documentation properly explain the dataset? Does the data import properly into its native dataset environment? Is consistent methodology used through out the data? Are all of the database's values and fields legitimate compared to the documentation? Is the database's topology free of errors that could impair the functionality of the data? Once the data is tested a report is written describing the evaluation. A copy of the report is then forwarded to the data originator for his/her review. If errors are found, the data originator is expected to make any necessary corrections and then provide those corrected coverages. After these steps have been taken data is considered archivable and made available for distribution.
Completeness_Report:
Mapping completed at time of publication. Alterations in approved nomenclature may require adjustments to rock unit labels in future.
