Computer Applications for the Petroleum Industry
Energy Research Center - University of Kansas
and
Petroleum Technology Transfer CouncilThis series of weekly workshops is designed to provide the participant with hands-on experience in the application of low-cost computer programs and use of Kansas-based data sets. Each workshop topic is organized around selected computer applications for exploration, reservoir evaluation and simulation. Workshops are independent and can be taken separately.
Workshop 1: Well-log Analysis on a PC using the PFEFFER spreadsheet program. Friday 11/7
Instructors: Geoff Bohling, John Doveton, Bill Guy and Lynn WatneyA hands-on course in log analysis for evaluation of oil and gas reservoirs using a low-cost spreadsheet program developed by the Kansas Geological Survey. Participants will load digital log files from Kansas wells available on the Internet, and analyze porosity, fluid saturation, and rock composition to evaluate productivity, permeability, and reservoir structure. Evaluation will use both graphical and calculation methods. The mapping options in PFEFFER will also be used to map geological and engineering descriptors across fields.
Workshop 2: Internet for the Petroleum Industry. Friday 11/14.
Instructors: Dana Adkins-Heljeson, Tim Carr and Ken Stalder
Hands-on experience with access to the Internet. Learn to send mail, read and subscribe to news groups, download data, and explore the Internet using several different methods. Gain an understanding of protocols, servers, Web browsers, arcane acronyms, and concepts necessary to understand and access the Internet. Locate and access World Wide Web servers that are sources of petroleum information. Locate information servers dedicated to Kansas oil and gas resources, search databases and download Kansas well and production data. Learn the fundamentals of creating your own web page. (Note: Internet access from the WSU Downtown Center has improved significantly.)
Workshop 3: Reservoir Simulation on a PC using US DOE BOAST 3 and Computer Mapping Packages. Friday 11/21.
Instructors: Paul Gerlach and Saibal Bhattacharya
Hands-on approach to integrated geologic and engineering reservoir simulation using public domain and low-cost software on a PC. Workshop uses data from the Schaben Field in Ness County, Kansas (USDOE Class 2 Study). All the data used in the workshop is available on the Internet. Participants will use selected programs to map field parameters, generate volumetric calculations, build a small simulation input file, history match and simulate a new well. Data results will be extracted and displayed using spreadsheet, plotting and mapping software. The results of the full field-simulation study will be reviewed. All software used is public domain or very low cost.
Who should attend: Operators, engineers, geologists, geophysicists, and consultants involved in the petroleum industry.
Registration: Registration for one or more workshops includes access to computer, class notes, lunch, and refreshments. Registration can be made by mail, fax, email, or phone using the attached form. Registration fee is $ 100.00/day or $250.00 for all three workshops, payable to the KU Energy Research Center. Attendance at workshops is limited by the number of computers available at the center. Participants should be somewhat familiar with Windows and general operations of either a PC or Macintosh.
Agenda: Registration will begin at 8:15 AM and all workshops will begin promptly at 8:45 AM. Lunch will be provided at the Lassen Restaurant.
Workshop Location: All workshops will be held at the WSU Downtown Center from 8:45 to 4:30. The WSU Center is located at 127 North Market. Parking is available at the Market Center Parking Garage at the reduced rate of $1.20 per day.
Additional information can be obtained from the KU Energy Research Center (785-864-4445) or Tim Carr at the Kansas Geological Survey (785-864-3965
