Teachers who attend will recieive:

Rocks in Your Head Manual contains lesson cycles with variety of product ideas. Lessons are subdivided by simple/complex content and basic/ abstract thinking skills. Classroom-ready materials include "Geo Bingo" with rock and mineral markers and hands-on materials.
Hunt for Fossil Fuels Oil exploration game where students will use critical and creative thinking skills to form oil companies, learn to contour a prospect, negotiate a lease, drill a well, and figure profits and losses. Teachers will play an abbreviated version at the workshop. Reproducible game materials include well logs, base maps, lease terms, and "money." This game can be played at three ability levels - elementary/intermediate and advanced.
Mineral Hardness Kit student-sized samples of a variety of minerals
Rock Samples student-sized samples of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks.

Workshop Description

The nationally acclaimed workshop, Rocks in Your Head, provides teachers of grades 3 through 12 with large mineral and rock samples and a 200-page manual of reproducible, classroom-ready materials for hands-on earth science activities. The Hunt for Fossil Fuels, a multi-discipline game, fulfills the proposed National Science Education Standards that call for students "...to identify and state a problem, design a solution including cost and risk-and-benefit analysis, implement a solution, and evaluate the solution." This oil exploration simulation gives students career experiences in today's energy industry. Well logs, structure base maps, land maps, lease terms, and Dinosaur Dollars are provided, and tasks are targeted to three ability levels. Workshop participants play a simplified version of the game.

Teacher friendly lesson cycles make implementation easy and allow each student to be appropriately challenged. Basic or abstract thinking processes, such as comprehension or problem solving are specified for every activity. Content covers both simple and complex concepts with topics involving universal themes and cross curricular exercises. Product choices are styled to give all students the opportunity to be successful. For example:"What contribution did I make to geology?" Table Logic Puzzle informs students of important men and women in geoscience and includes templates that allow students to create puzzles for other topics of interest. Relative Age Sequence Puzzles, Get a Half-Life, and Cookie Cross Sections of the Earth's Interior will enrich any earth science program. Geo-Bingo, Geopardy, and Mineral Family Feud represent additional student project ideas that can easily be integrated into any curriculum. The activities appeal to a variety of learning styles and require little or no teacher preparation time.

When teachers actively involved students, real learning takes place. Rocks in Your Head provides the means for educators, regardless of scientific expertise, to empower their students to become fife-long learners.
