Petroleum Log Analysis

Instructors: John H. Doveton and Ricardo A. Olea
Course languages: English (Doveton) and Spanish (Olea).
Cost: $85
Class size: A maximum of 40 participants

To be held: Sept. 6, 2001

Course summary: A one-day course on petrophysical log analysis for petroleum geologists, engineers, and geophysicists. The course is both an introduction and a review of current methods in the estimation of pore volume and geometry, fluid/gas saturation, producibility, and permeability from logs for both clastic and carbonate reservoirs. In addition to the Spanish/English course manual, participants will be provided with a disc of spreadsheet files that contain case studies and techniques described in the course.

About the instructors: Dr. John H. Doveton worked as an exploration geologist for Mobil Oil Canada in Calgary and then joined the Kansas Geological Survey. He has taught over 50 log analysis courses for universities and industry in the United States, Canada, Europe, and the Middle East since 1975, and is an author of the widely-used TERRALOG interactive computer log analysis system. He received the 1981 Best Paper Award from "The Log Analyst" and has been a Distinguished Speaker for the SPWLA. He is the author of three log analysis books.

Dr. Ricardo A. Olea worked as a seismologist and well log analyst with Empresa Nacional del Petroleo in Punta Arenas, Chile for fifteen years before joining the Kansas Geological Survey. He has published extensively on a variety of mathematical geology applications, particularly in the areas of geostatistics and the automated correlation of logs. He was the President of the International Association for Mathematical Geology from 1996 to 2000.
