Workshop 6
The Statistical Analysis of Compositional Data
Instructors: Carles Barceló-Vidal (Spanish), and Vera Pawlowsky-Glahn (English)
Course languages: English and Spanish
Cost: $85
Class size: A maximum of 40 participants
To be held: Sept. 8, 2001
Summary:
Compositional data (e.g., the geochemical composition of
rocks) are vectors of data that characterize the components expressed as
fractions of a total. Lack of independence of the components causes the
standard statistical analysis to be inadequate. The objective of the
course is to give a first approach to the methodology introduced in
recent years by John Aitchison for statistical analysis of compositional
data.
Program:
- The compositional data.
- Concept. The simplex as a sample space.
- The Aitchison's geometry in the simplex.
- Statistical modelitation of compositional data.
- Measures of central tendency.
- Measures of dispersion and dependence.
- Exploratory data analysis. The biplots.
- Statistical distributions on the simplex.
- Miscellaneous of problems related with compositional data
- Subcompositions.
- Regression in the simplex.
- Cluster and discriminant analysis.
- The problem of the zeros.
Short curriculum of the professors of the course:
C. Barceló and V. Pawlowsky have carried their research on the statistical
analysis of compositional data, in the line introduced by John Aitchison in
1983. Besides studying the most theoretical aspects of the topic, they
collaborate from years ago with geologists, paleontologists, chemists, in
the implementation of this statistical methodology in order to solve the
problems to which these investigators should face to perform statistical
analysis of the compositional data which they manage.
