Workshop 5

Introduction to Statistics for Earth Scientists

Instructors: John C. Davis and Pedro F. Rodriguez E.
Course languages: English and Spanish
Cost: $85
Class size: A maximum of 40 participants
To be held: Sept. 6, 2001

Summary:

This one-day course will introduce the use of statistical methods that are suitable for analysis of geological information. Unlike the well-behaved data collected by randomized sampling from industrial processes or controlled laboratory experiments, geological data often are highly skewed with inflated variances and numerous outliers. Observations typically are not independent because they are spatially correlated. Many geological variables are compositions, or parts of a whole, and are marked by inherent intercorrelations. All of these deviations from normality mean that classical parametric statistics can be applied to geological data only with extreme caution, and special steps must be taken in an analysis.

The course will examine the distributions of typical geological variables and how deficiencies in distributions can be overcome by use of robust and non-parametric techniques. We also will provide an introduction to geostatistics and to the analysis of compositional data by use of logratio transformations. Examples and case studies will be drawn from all areas of the earth sciences.

About the instructors:
Prof. John C. Davis is Chief of the Mathematical Geology Section of the Kansas Geological Survey. He has taught numerous short courses world-wide on statistical applications to geology, the use of computers in the earth sciences, and petroleum risk assessment. His textbook "Statistics and Data Analysis in Geology," is soon to appear in its 3rd edition. A former President of the IAMG, Davis was awarded the Krumbein Medal by the Association and the Haidinger Medal for contributions to applied geology by the Austrian Geological Survey.
