Workshop 2
Introduction to Groundwater-Systems Hydrology and Water Resources Sustainability for Non-Specialists
Instructors: Marios Sophocleous and Lucila Candela
Course languages: English (Sophocleous), Spanish (Candela)
Cost: $85
Class size: Maximum of 30 participants
To be held: Sept. 6, 2001
In this one-day course we will cover basic groundwater
terminology and concepts, including groundwater flow systems and their
delineation. We will study how such flow system concepts can help us
with understanding environmental problems, surface water-groundwater
interactions, and human impacts on the environment. This will lead us
into the hydrologic basis for understanding water sustainability issues,
which constitute the most controversial items in water management and
policy today. Sample problems illustrating various hydrologic concepts
will be solved in class, and the attempts followed in the state of
Kansas, USA towards achieving water sustainability will be discussed.
Biographical sketch of Marios Sophocleous

Survey, The University of Kansas, and Adjunct Professor of Geology at
the same University. He is Editor of the Journal of Hydrology, and also
serves in the Editorial Boards of Computers & Geosciences and Natural
Resources Research. He was the 1997 recipient of the Best Practice Paper
Award by the Irrigation and Drainage Engineering Division of the
American Society of Civil Engineers. He also edited a book titled
"Perspectives on sustainable development of water resources in Kansas"
published in 1998 by the Kansas Geological Survey as Bulletin 239.
