The Windows-based Hydrogeologic Exploration and Appraisal Toolkit (WHEAT) is a suite of public-domain, user-friendly programs for computer-based mapping for natural resource investigations. WHEAT is a Geographic Information System (GIS) or desktop mapping tool that runs on a low-cost PC running Windows and takes full advantage of the Windows interface.

Overview of Digital Maps in the WHEAT Geographic Information System (GIS)
WHEAT was initially designed to aid in the display, analysis, and manipulation of hydrogeologic information, but has been kept as general purpose as possible, and has been used in water, petroleum, and a variety of other applications.
The central programs in WHEAT are a set of electronic mapping tools that allow the analyst to construct maps from data stored in a relational database, obtain information on a geographic feature by selecting it with the mouse, perform geographical analysis of the data (such as finding the nearest feature), and export the data to other programs for further analysis. Additional programs are used for importing and exporting data, maintenance, and coordinate projection.
The WHEAT programs were developed by Greg Pouch.

WHEAT programs use data stored in a Microsoft Access database, including the coordinates, so that the user has easy access to the coordinates for other analysis. WHEAT is designed to be used in conjunction with other programs. All data in a WHEAT database are in publicly-defined formats.
WHEAT includes a suite of import-export programs as well as variety of other programs.
