Color-filled maps and Surface III

The shade command of SURFACE III creates color-filled contour maps, also called hypsometric maps. Contour lines and/or data postings can be overlain on shade maps. A color legend can be drawn to the side of a shade map.

The user can also choose to create a symbol map, where each grid cell is filled with a color but no interpolation is performed between adjacent grid nodes.

In general, up to 16 colors can be defined for the color maps. An external file can be used to add additional levels. The user also has control over the map border tick intervals and the tick label interval.
