TORP Celebrates 30 Years of Service to State

photo of Paul Willhite and Don Green receiving awards from Stuart BellThe Tertiary Oil Recovery Project (TORP) held its 30 th anniversary dinner on April 23, 2004, at the Dole Institute of Politics at the University of Kansas. Invited guests included TORP staff and students (past and present), Chemical and Petroleum Engineering faculty and staff, university administrators, members of the TORP Advisory Board and oil operators with whom TORP has interacted. During the reception preceding the dinner, Chancellor Robert Hemenway and Dean of the Engineering School Stuart Bell presented Don Green and Paul Willhite, co-directors and founders of TORP, plaques in recognition of their service. More than 150 people attended the anniversary celebration. The program consisted of presentations by Green and Willhite, in which the history and activities over the years were described.

TORP was founded in July 1974 as a state-funded program to conduct research on new oil recovery techniques that would be applicable to Kansas’s reservoirs and which could be implemented by independent oil operators. The general objectives were to conduct research on useful recovery processes, provide technology transfer activities, help operators conduct field tests on new processes and train students for the industry.

Over the years TORP has continued to work to meet the original objectives. State funding of research has been supplemented by numberous grants from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and industry. A number of field demonstration projects, funded by the DOE on a cost-share basis, have been conducted in cooperation with the Kansas Geological Survey and Kansas companies. Approximately 75 graduate students have earned graduate degrees in the program over the years. (Oread Engineer, Spring 2004).
