IV: Conclusions

Considering our objectives and the client base these data are intended to serve, the 1997 water level measurement program (acquisition and quality control) undertaken by the KGS was successful. Examination of the water level and supporting data leads to the obvious conclusion that this data set is more complete, was more cost effective to acquire, is of higher quality (based on obvious errors discovered in previous year's measurements), and has dramatically increased our exposure and service role in western Kansas. Decisions and philosophies concerning the acquisition and maintenance of the annual water level network are governed by our client base which has been identified as follows:

  1. Landowners and Citizens of Kansas,
  2. Commercial/Agricultural Interests in Kansas,
  3. Regulatory and Governing Agencies and Districts in Kansas, and
  4. Kansas Researchers and Scientists.

Data acquisition techniques were developed specifically to allow analysis of critical questions about the network architecture, quality of historical data, and operational concern for future measurements. These analyses have provided valuable insight into influential aspects of the acquisition program and determinations of network undersampling, important well characteristics, and guidelines for replacement well selections (Appendix C). Continued development of techniques and methodologies related to the measurement of water levels in Kansas will eventually lead to a much more accurate and useful database for the existing applications as well as a large assortment of potential applications and uses.
