Cluster Run Number:1

Variables selected in cluster (include any weights if not set at 1):  1

Number of Clusters: 10

Distance Method: [ X ]Average     [   ]Maximum

COMMENTS OR DESCRIPTION ON CLUSTER OUTPUT:

As the karstic systems are geologically characterized by soils dominated by Carbonates, the first experiment was carried out with this unique variable. The results show that  the variable selected for the experiment was not a well descriptor of the karstic systems.

The cluster output put together areas with quite different soil characteristics as the Pacific Coast and the East part of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Additional Comments on problems or improvements needed:

Is probably that the database used include all carbonate forms present in the soils. One recommendation is that in the database should be include the soil calcium carbonate as other variable, due this carbonate form is the dominant in the karstic systems.

Variables selected in cluster (include any weights if not set at 1):  3

Sst_min_month, Salinity_min_month, Runoff_total_ann

Number of Clusters: 5

Distance Method: [  X ]Average     [   ]Maximum

COMMENTS OR DESCRIPTION ON CLUSTER OUTPUT:

As the first experiment didn’t works, the hydrological was used to select the new variables. Was expected that these variables should reflect the karstic pattern. Additionally, the area used to work was the Atlantic coast reducing the “noise” introduced by the Pacific coast characteristics.

The results showed that these experiment separate quite well (cluster 4) the Peninsulas of Yucatan and Florida as Cuba Island, where exist an important karstic areas. However, in this cluster was included an area of the middle of Gulf of Mexico which is not dominated by the karstic characteristic. The cluster 4 is which explain the first karstic grouping was dominated by temperature and runoff variables.

Additional Comments on problems or improvements needed:

**************************************************************************************

The soil salinity database didn’t reflect well the low salinities in areas with groundwater discharges. The pixel size is to large and information from the first 100-500 m from the coast must be included, due this region is where is reflected the anthropogenic activities in the karstic coasts.

-Sst_mean_monthly, -Salinity_min_month, -Runoff_total_ann, -Cel_percent_water

Number of Clusters: 10

Distance Method: [ X ]Average     [   ]Maximum

COMMENTS OR DESCRIPTION ON CLUSTER OUTPUT:

In this cluster experiment, was added the Cel_percent_water variable, due in the central and northern regions of the Gulf of Mexico, the surface covered by coastal lagoons and estuaries is larger than in the Yucatan, Florida and Cuba coasts. The clusters two and four explain the pattern of karstic areas characterized by low runoff, and high salinity min_month.

This experiment should be useful to create a typology of karstic systems.

Additional Comments on problems or improvements needed:

**************************************************************************************

A new variable should be created to improve this experiment. These variable could be a function of the runoff and minimum salinity or salinity gradient, however, as in the second experiment the salinity database should be improved with data from the first 500 m from the coast line.

-Identify the variables which should grouping the coastal zones in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea  influenced by groundwater discharges,  and separate the east cost of  the Yucatan Peninsula from the rest, due exist quite differences in these two areas in spite of these are influenced by similar hydrological variables.

COMMENTS OR DESCRIPTION ON CLUSTER OUTPUT:

The experiment was succsseful in separate the east cost of Yucatan, which show greater number of coastal sinkholes than the northern zone, and the surface of the coastal environments as bays is greater than the other region. However, when is observed the cluster figure, can be observed that the cluster 4 group the areas where coral reefs are present in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico, including the Florida Kyes.
