Position: Geologic Sample Research Technician (8379)

Salary, Employment Status, and Fringe Benefits:
Starting salary $32,000-$36,000 (plus benefits) depending on qualifications. Full-time, regular non-exempt, position with 12-month appointment to unclassified professional staff at the University of Kansas, subject to annual review. Benefits include University staff privileges; 22 days vacation leave, 12 days sick leave, and up to 9 holidays annually; group medical and dental, life insurance, and retirement program options.
Duties
This position is jointly funded by the Kansas Geological Survey and the University of Kansas Department of Geology.
- Thin section preparation, staining, peel preparation. 35%
- Sample preparation for SEM, geochemistry and other geologic applications. 10%
- Rock preparation--sawing, slabbing, polishing, thin section billets. 25%
- Inventory and archive existing rock and thin section collections, including digital imaging and creation of data catalogs. 5%
- Participate in building and updating of petrophysics and core library inventory databases. 5%
- Maintain and repair specialized equipment including microscopes and rock and thin section preparation equipment. 5%
- Inventory and order expendables for rock preparation laboratories. 5%
- Train and oversee other users in proper use of equipment and preparation of geological samples. 5%
- Perform other duties as are necessary; this includes developing techniques for preparation of geological samples including design and fabrication of equipment and laboratory facilities. 5%
Required Qualifications
- At least one year of coursework, training, or job experience that is rock-based, and training or experience in optical mineralogy.
- At least six months demonstrated expertise in preparation of polished thin sections of rock samples.
Position Requirement:
- Physical ability to operate rock preparation equipment and to prepare thin sections for analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
- B.S. or B.A. degree in geology or closely related field.
- Demonstrated expertise in petrographic analysis of thin sections of rocks.
- Demonstrated expertise in maintenance and repair of equipment in rock preparation laboratory.
- Demonstrated experience in geologic research.
- Demonstrated experience in training of individuals in rock preparation techniques.
- Demonstrated expertise in technique development in preparation and analysis of geologic samples.
