Position: Geology Assistant--Half-time position

Official University Title: Assistant

Appointment: 20 hours per week, during business hours, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday.

Rate of Pay: $14.42-$16.35 per hour, depending on qualifications.

Location: Core Library and Core Storage Facility, KGS, Lawrence, KS

Tentative Start Date: December 1, 2009


Position Overview

This work includes primarily the cutting and polishing of rock samples in preparation for digital photography, and the subsequent digital photography and inventory of prepared samples. Work may also include archiving, inventorying, retrieving, preparing, and shipping of geological samples; maintenance and repair of rock preparation equipment; and ordering of expendables as needed for preparation of geological materials.

Responsibilities

60%--Rock preparation, including sawing, slabbing, and polishing, and photographing of samples. Sample preparation. Includes retrieval, sawing, slabbing, polishing, photographing, and re-stocking of archived material. Retrieval consists of taking a request for material, locating the storage location(s), using an electric powered narrow-aisle order-picker to pull the requested item(s), hand load the item(s) into a vehicle to transport the material from long-term storage to the saw room in order to produce a core slab for polishing and photographing. Sawing the core produces a slab of core to be polished for saw mark removal. Polishing is done by a variety of methods dependant on desired finish quality by using various grades of wet/dry sandpaper. The slabs are then moved to the photo room. Images are captured, saved to a personal computer, and added to the KGS core photo library inventory. All material is then returned to long-term storage.

20%--Inventory and archive geologic material.

10%--Maintain and repair specialized equipment for rock preparation.

5%--Assist in and instruct others on core retrieval and shipment.

5%--Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  1. Valid Kansas driver's license at onset of employment.
  2. High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Position Requirements

  1. Physical ability to operate rock preparation and handling equipment.
  2. Ability to tolerate working environment that may be dusty from rock preparation, old core boxes, etc.
  3. Ability to lift and move boxes up to 50 pounds to overhead height.
  4. Ability to lift and move (with assistance) boxes of cores above 50 pounds and up to 200 pounds.
  5. Ability to work in core facilities which may range in temperatures affected by extreme outdoor Kansas weather.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Experience in library or warehouse inventory control.
  2. Experience with Windows-based computers.
  3. Experience in preparation of geologic samples.
  4. Experience with digital photography and creation of data catalogs.
  5. Experience with computerized management of library or warehouse inventory.
  6. Experience or course work in geology or related field.
  7. Experience with the use of handtools and minor mechanical repairs.
  8. Experience operating and maintaining a fork lift.
  9. Ability to lift and carry 70 pounds.
