Position: Analytical Chemist (8427)

Position: Full-time unclassified professional position with benefits.
70% Analyze water samples and other aqueous solutions for inorganic constituents to support KGS research and service programs and collaborate in analytical work with other departments at the University of Kansas. Apply new, modify existing, and develop laboratory and field analytical methods as appropriate to achieve needed accuracy and detection limits for species of interest. Maintain quality assurance/control procedures to achieve high-quality analyses. Operate a wide range of analytical equipment, including an ion chromatograph, flow injection spectrophotometer, colorimeter, titrimeter, ion selective electrodes, and mV and conductance meters. Assist in the laboratory and field operation of a gas chromatograph for analysis of natural gases. Maintain analytical equipment and chemistry laboratory. May operate other analytical instrumentation at the KGS and in other KU laboratories.
15% Manage the analytical services laboratory, including logging and tracking samples, supervising and coordinating analytical work by another staff member, supervising student assistants, assuring quality assurance and control for analytical data, and transmitting final data to appropriate individuals. Manage the laboratory budget, order laboratory supplies and equipment, and maintain electronic files of analytical data. Prepare sample bottles and provide preservatives for water sampling, and assist in obtaining equipment for field chemical measurements. Determine and obtain most appropriate analytical instrumentation to update laboratory equipment.
15% Provide technical assistance to KGS research staff on research studies, such as water sample collection and preservation procedures that are appropriate for the analytical methods selected to meet data requirements. Pursue available opportunities to assist in data interpretation and participate in or develop research studies with KGS scientists.
