Position: Research Assistant (206393)

Starting Date: Position available September 1, 2007.

Salary: $58,000-$63,000 + benefits for full-time position.


Duties

Responsible for creating analytical software tools to analyze and plot stratigraphic data in support of the the Stratigraphic Research Section. Create software so that scientists in the Stratigraphic Research Section can execute the software in their web browser to access the Survey's Oracle digital well data and stratigraphic database (in real time) to perform sophisticated analysis and to map the stratigraphic column across the state of Kansas. Work with scientists to design the analytical software tools that will best serve the research requirements for the stratigraphic research group.

  1. Stratigraphic Analytical Software Development (80%): Intelligent software to facilitate dynamic on-the-fly cross section construction incorporating surface and subsurface web and user-based information. Focus is on quantitative analysis and imaging of lithology, detecting and classifying surfaces, their correlation, and access in incorporation of related information.
  2. Stratigraphic Data Organization (15%): Manage core, outcrop, petrophysical, paleontologic, and geochemical data to visualize sequence stratigraphy in 3D.
  3. Create quarterly reports & presentations (5%): Present progress report on the development of the analytical software tools.

Required Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in geology, geophysics, or physics or closely related field.
  2. At least one year of demonstrated experience in earth-science research applications.
  3. At least one year of experience as a scientific software programmer.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. MA/MS degree in relevant field of science, geology, geophysics, or physics or closely related field.
  2. Experience with scientific programming, particularly in the geosciences.
  3. Experience with graphical programming, particularly in ploting and displaying oil & gas well data.
  4. Working knowledge of Java.
  5. Working knowledge of HTML and Javascript.
  6. Working knowledge of SQL.
  7. Working knowledge of Oracle Stored Procedures, PL/SQL .
  8. Working knowledge of XML.
