Position: Temporary Engineering Technician (00008339)

Starting Date: Position available on or about July 9, 2012; exact starting date negotiable.

Salary, Employment Status, and Fringe Benefits: $10.00-$12.50 per hour. This is a temporary position and therefore it cannot exceed 999 hours in a calendar year. Temporary positions do not include benefits.

Section Overview

Exploration Services develops and uses several techniques to provide information about the subsurface, working to come up with less expensive, less invasive methods of providing images of the underground. This includes innovative methods of high resolution shallow seismic reflection. The section also provides drilling in support of water, petroleum, and basic subsurface research. An active program in the maintenance and rehabilitation of wells drilled by the Kansas Geological Survey is also part of this section.

This section also runs a program designed to monitor changes and identify regional trends in the High Plains, Dakota, and alluvial aquifers. The Water Well Project annually measures about 1,380 wells in 47 central and western Kansas counties.

In addition, as part of their work, this section has developed WinSeis and SurfSeis software for processing data generated by seismic reflection and for monitoring wells in Kansas.

Responsibilities

Provide support for research scientists and field staff with various projects. Work will be intermittent.

Schedule and drive vehicles to and from garage for repair or routine service. Minor electrical repairs, work around mechanized equipment, facility upkeep, drive and maintain ATVs. Work will be based on periodic availability of students as consistent with project needs. Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

High school diploma or its equivalency.
Basic knowledge of shop tools and shop safety as evidenced by application material.
Experience working outdoors as evidenced by application material.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with the use of hand tools and minor mechanical repairs.
Commercial, agricultural, or domestic vehicle experience including maintenance and troubleshooting.
Ability to be away from Lawrence during summer for a week or more at a time (w/travel expenses paid).
Engineering or geoscience background.
Work experience with welding, cutting, grinding, and basic metal fabrication, plus electronic fabrication, troubleshooting, and soldering.
