Dr. Marios Sophocleous, Kansas Geological Survey, Lawrence, Kansas, USA has been appointed as new member of the Board of Editors of the Journal of Hydrology per 1 April 1999. For those readers who do not know Dr. Sophocleous personally, the following background should be of interest.
Marios Sophocleous comes from Cyprus. After earning renewed scholarships from the State Scholarship Institute of Greece, he received his Bachelor of Science degree in Geology and Natural Sciences in 1971 from the School of Physics and Mathematics of the University of Athens, Greece with the highest distinction. Right after graduation he earned a Fulbright Scholarship to study in the United States, where he obtained a Master of Science degree in Water Resources from the Civil Engineering Department of the University of Kansas in 1973.
Following that, he moved to the University of Alberta, Canada, where he was offered teaching and research assistantships, and earned I.W. Killam memorial scholarships. Working with Prof. Frank W. Schwartz, then at the Department of Geology there, and with Dr. Jack van Schaik at the Canada Agriculture, Lethbridge Research Station, he earned his doctorate degree in hydrogeology in 1978.
Right after graduation he was employed at the Geohydrology section of the Kansas Geological Survey of the University of Kansas, where he conducts multidisciplinary research and teaching. In 1987 he became a senior scientist (equivalent to full professor) at the Kansas Geological Survey. He is also Adjunct Professor of Geology at the University of Kansas.
Dr. Sophocleous has more than 200 publications to his record, including more than 40 in refereed outlets. He also authored and edited a book on "Perspectives on Sustainable Development of Water Resources in Kansas" in 1998. That same year he received the "1997 Best Practice Paper Award" from the American Society of Civil Engineers, Journal of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering. Dr. Sophocleous maintains broad interests in research, including unsaturated and saturated flow theory, measurement, and modeling aquifer recharge dynamics, surface water-ground-water interactions, parameter estimation and regionalization techniques, subsurface coupled heat and water movement, physically-based approaches to ground-water and contaminant transport modeling, regional ground-water flow systems analysis, integrated watershed hydrology and modeling, including soil-vegetation-atmosphere hydrologic interactions, water resources management, and many others. He has been an Associate Editor for the Journal of Hydrology since 1993. (Since 1999, he has been serving as an Editor for the Journal of Hydrology). He is also an Associate Editor for the Hydrogeology Journal, and a member of the Editorial Advisory Boards of Computers & Geosciences, and Natural Resources Research.
We welcome Dr. Sophocleous to the Board of Editors and wish him much success in his new role.
