LAWRENCE--A Kansas Geological Survey emeritus senior scientist at the University of Kansas has been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world's largest general scientific society.
Bob Buddemeier was one of 539 AAAS members awarded the distinction of Fellow for 2011. AAAS encompasses 262 affiliated scientific societies and organizations with 10 million members worldwide.
Individuals are elevated to Fellow based on their efforts to advance science applications deemed scientifically or socially distinguished.
Buddemeier was selected for his work applying geochemical tracers to the management of resources in environmental change, including coral reefs and water resources.
Joining the KGS in 1991, Buddemeier was project manager of the KGS High Plains aquifer evaluation project and principal investigator of the Virtual Kansas Water Resources Institute.
Buddemeier is author or coauthor of numerous publications and has expertise in such areas as characterization of complex systems, salt water-fresh water interactions, hydro-ecosystem interactions, and climate change.
The 2011 Fellows will be honored February 18 at the AAAS annual meeting in Vancouver, British Columbia. They were announced in the December 23 issue of AAAS's journal Science, one of the world's leading peer-reviewed scientific publications.
