Morton County, Kansas

Capped by the Ogallala Formation, Point of Rocks overlooks the Cimarron River in west-central Morton County. A landmark on the Santa Fe Trail's Cimarron Cut-off (known as the Dry Route), this outcrop signalled water--the nearby Middle Spring--to thirsty travelers. Present-day travelers can see numerous wagon ruts from those earlier campers. Point of Rocks is located west of K-27, about 10 miles north of Elkhart in the Cimarron National Grasslands (from The Geologic Record, vol. 2.1).
