Session I
Building National and Regional Geologic Map Databases
Conveners:
- David R. Soller, U.S. Geological Survey, USA
- John Broome, Geological Survey of Canada, Canada
In many countries, public demand for digital map data and geological
surveys ability to provide it have been increasing in recent years.
National geological surveys, in many cases in cooperation with state,
provincial, or other regional geological surveys, have begun to consider
how to meet this demand for map data. To do so requires, at a minimum,
development of:
- standards and guidelines for map data;
- a data management system;
- a data delivery system; and, perhaps most importantly,
- a clear understanding of the technical capabilities and
interests of the audience who will use the map data.
Because these tasks
must be addressed by each agency as it builds its map databases, and
because the tasks are so technically challenging, collaboration among the
world's geological surveys is essential. Collaboration is especially
compelling today, when most geological surveys are faced with decreasing
budgets and staffing. This Technical Session draws together for the first
time numerous leaders of national geologic map database efforts. The
session's goal is to serve as a venue for information-sharing and for
development of the personal and technical contacts from which collaborative
work and technical assistance can develop. From discussions with
colleagues around the world, it is clear that all geological surveys, large
and small, face the same challenges in building a GIS and map production
program, and in building their national geologic map databases. This
session is intended to be relatively informal, with ample time for open
discussion, so that technical issues and personal contacts can be explored.
