National Natural Resources Digital Information--Availability and Implications

by Francisco Javier Jiménez Nava,
Instituto Nacional de Estadística Geografía e Informática, Mexico

The development of the countries is based, in a great part, on the knowledge of their natural resources, their circumstances and distribution. The different challenges that represent the economic development and social justice require such information.

Today, when Geographic Information Systems are valuable and proved tools in the analysis of our surrounding; more truthful, more opportune and normalized information is required..The National Institute of Statistic, Geography and Informatics (INEGI), in addition to its mandate of publishing the normativity for handling digital geographic information, has invested important resources in order to satisfy the users demand of this kind of information, so that digital data sets in format such as: vector, raster and alphanumeric are being produced and updated covering different aspects:

  • Land Use and Vegetation
  • Physiography
  • Geology
  • Pedology
  • Hydrology (Ground and surface)
  • Climatology
Such data sets are multitemporary and multiscale ( 1:1 000 000 and 1:250 000) visions of the national reality.

The first results of this great effort have been exploited by the National Program of Land Ordering and by the National Forest Inventory. But there is wide availability of this data, complemented by dictionaries, codification tables and auxiliary information.
