Saudi Geological Survey, Saudi Arabia

Concept:

  • The Earth Science database of the Saudi Geological Survey reflects the core activity domains of the SGS. In reality, the domains are inter-linked, which facilitates their integration into a homogeneous system.

Core Activities:

  • Fields of interest of the SGS and its predecessors include: mineral occurrences, groundwater, and natural hazards, plus support activities such as mapping, drilling, geophysics, and chemical analysis.

Targets:

  • Build a national Earth Science database for the Kingdom, preserving the heritage and holding basic and interpreted data in all related fields.
  • Create teams of geologists from each core activity and computer programmers qualified in database design, development, management, and scientific applications.
  • Allow access to the data and their thematic applications by selected outside organizations.
  • Provide services to the community in fields of their interest, such as groundwater, natural hazards, and mineral deposits.
  • Exchange information between the SGS and organizations with similar interests.
  • Set up a geographic information system (GIS) for combination of all thematic data into user applications.
  • Create an electronic Arabic-English earth science dictionary for the standardization of terms and definitions.

Tools:

  • High-performance hardware, networks, and software (Windows 2000 Server, SQL Server, etc.). Specific facilities have been created for achieving the targets.

Final Products:

  • Standard or custom reports, booklets, and maps for SGS geoscientists.
  • Selected products such as GIS applications for outside customers.
